Shirodhara is an ancient restorative procedure that stems from the Ayurvedic wisdom of India. Shirodhara literally means to pour (shiro) & head (dara). The gentle streaming of a warm herb infused oil on the forehead's centre, the 'third eye', works specifically on balancing emotions and activity of the mind.

Shirodara works with the pineal gland to relax the nervous system and allow healing to take place,

"The body heals itself when we are at rest. We are all so busy in the west: the calm, meditative state induced by Shirodara allows for healing and rejuvenation of the body," says Ayurvedic practitioner Kalee Mund of Hollow Reed Holistic in Winnipeg.

The treatment is always done in silence, beginning and ending with a smudge, the burning of sage.

All people will see benefits following a treatment: sleeping more soundly; feeling more grounded; and feeling more creative and inspired. Kalee says the most dramatic results are seen on very busy people, and women going through menopause.

For the ultimate in relaxation and rejuvenation, add an Abyanga massage to your Shirodara treatment for Kalee's signature Bliss Therapy. This deeply relaxing hot oil massage helps remove toxins, stimulate circulation, relieve muscle and joint pain, as well as enhance the immune system.

The Bliss therapy, well worth it at $120 for a 90 minute treatment, brings an increased sense of well-being through deep relaxation, which in turn supports the immune system, the healing process, and our connection to our spiritual nature.

Kalee meets with all her clients beforehand to get a sense of what treatment will benefit them most and to determine their dosha to create a custom oil for the treatments to create balance in the body.  The warm oil used during treatment is created specifically for your dosha type to balance out your particular dosha. For me, a pitta/vitta (fire/wind), the oil was meant to cool and ground, and for the days following the treatment, I had never felt more firmly grounded on the earth.

Lovely article, but a minor correction.. Shiro is Sanskrit for "head" just as Dhara is for "flow" making it Shirodhara (: xx
